About Us
The Buffalo Creek Literacy Project, (BCLP) an independent non-profit organization, provides literacy education for adults (16 +) and their families in Stokes and Eastern Surry Counties in order to eradicate illiteracy.
Director Stokes County, Mary Lee received a Master's
Degree in Teaching from the University of Tennessee in 1994. She is
an NC certified teacher of English and has 15 years teaching experience
in public and private schools, grades 6-12. She taught learning disabled
children in the resource classroom for two years and within the regular-ed
classroom for 10 years.
Mary started the BCLP in order to reduce illiteracy in Stokes and Eastern
Surry Counties.
Tutors Needed
The BCLP needs you!
Volunteer to help someone improve his or her reading, writing, or math
skills. You do not need teaching experience to help someone learn to
read; all you need is commitment and a high school diploma or GED. Our
staff will provide the training, materials, and other support you need.
What is it like to tutor someone one-on-one? Most volunteers find it an extremely rewarding experience. It provides the opportunity to share the excitement and fulfillment of helping someone read for the first time, and gives tutors a greater understanding of people. Tutors are asked to commit one-and-a-half to three hours per week with their students. Tutors prepare their own creative lessons and can chart their progress by regularly submitting reports to the program.
